Spelling City

Students can log on to spellingcity.com and find my classroom to play games that will help them study for their spelling test. This is great way to get practice beyond writing or saying the words.

What have we been up to?

I'm sure you've all asked this question, or maybe "What is it they do all day?" or "What is my child learning in that room?" Your wait is over! We have been so busy I did not think about scheduling time to blog about it, oops. After a somewhat rough start, we have started so many things in our little classroom community. In fact, that's what we have been and are still working on.
We started by outlawing the word can't. Instead we talked about always using the word try.

We have begun our Reader's Workshop. The students are really in charge of their learning during this time. They started off great with sharing their learning and tracking their thinking as they read. I haven't heard one can't!

Although we might not be able to read all the words, we discussed how there are other ways to enjoy books.

When we find a book we really enjoy and want to recommend to others, students are invited to put the title on the chart.
Schema seems like such a big word for first grade but I bet they can tell you what it is. Schema helps us to make connections to books and better understand what we are reading.
Just like runners, we have to build up our stamina as readers. Our goal for this week is 15 minutes. We are so close. We are at 14 minutes on Thursday.
Everyone wants to go to the "I Spy" center and look for things in the tube. right now we are working on telling the beginning sound of the things we find. Writing words on the dry erase boards is also a favorite center activity.

St. Patrick's day is a holiday. If you lived in Ireland you would celebrate for 3 whole days.

Meet the Student Teacher!

Hi! My name is Kasey Williams and I am your child's student teacher. For the past few days, I have enjoyed getting to know each child and I am excited about what the rest of my time here at ACPC has in store! As a pre-service teacher, this is my last stepping stone towards making my dream come true, teaching. I will be graduating from Western Kentucky University in May with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education. I love learning and it is my goal to share my passion with your child.

In our class by: Atley

In our class we have been doing Author's Purpose and synonyms like mad and angry.  For recess we watched a movie and we had a snack too and we took a spring test.

Outside Finally... by Madison

I enjoyed going outside finally.  Because we haven't gone out in a while.  It was warm outside and we got to play.  We had to play at 1:40 (because of swim lessons for the other 2nd graders) I played hide-and-seek and tag.  I had a lot of fun.

Here Comes the Sun!

Between the snow, ice and frost we haven't had a "normal" school week in some time. The blog has really suffered through the winter. Good News! The sun has started to make normal appearances here at ACPC and we are getting back into full swing. This is the time of year when second graders become more independent and I begin to give them more responsibilities in the classroom. Once a week, the class will be writing a paragraph for the blog something we have been doing.A few paragraphs will be chosen each week to post to the blog. Students will also begin captioning photos and hopefully taking photos from now on, making the blog more theirs than mine. I hope you enjoy.
